Quigley, Equality Caucus Urge Secretary Blinken to Protect LGBTQ+ Rights In Ukraine

Chicago, Ill. – This week, Equality Caucus Vice Chair Mike Quigley (IL-05), along with 34 members of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus and the Congressional Ukraine Caucus sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, urging him to take steps to protect LGBTQ+ individuals and other minorities in Ukraine. In the letter, Members noted the additional risks the LGBTQ+ community and other marginalized communities are likely to face now that an invasion by Russia has begun. The Members emphasized the urgency of the United States working to safeguard the rights of marginalized people in Ukraine as this crisis unfolds. The Kremlin's long history of anti-LGBTQ+ policies and rhetoric underscores the unique threats the LGBTQ+ community face should Ukraine lose their sovereignty. Following the recent missile strikes and movement of troops into Ukraine by Russia today, this issue demands immediate attention.
