Equality Caucus Drops Report on House GOP’s Obsession with Attacking LGBTQI+ Community

February 12, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC Today, the Congressional Equality Caucus published its report, Obsessed: House Republicans’ Relentless Attacks Against the LGBTQI+ Community in 2023, and released the following statement:

“When Republicans took control of the House last year, they launched an avalanche of attacks against the LGBTQI+ community.” said Equality Caucus Chair Mark Pocan (WI-02). “You expect bullies in school, but there are bullies walking the halls of Congress too. The House GOP is obsessed with targeting LGBTQI+ people—especially trans kids—because it gives them a little more clout with the most extreme parts of their base. House Republicans need to quit their obsessive attacks against our community and do what the American public wants Congress to do—tackle the actual challenges facing everyday Americans.”

The Equality Caucus’s Report, Obsessed: House Republicans’ Relentless Attacks Against the LGBTQI+ Community in 2023, chronicles the GOP’s anti-LGBTQI+ activity during the first session of the 118th Congress:

  • House Republicans held more than  50 anti-LGBTQI+ votes on the House floor.
  • House Republicans filed more than  95 anti-LGBTQI+ amendments to bills going to the House floor.
  • House Republicans and their witnesses made anti-LGBTQI+ remarks in more than  40 committee hearings.
  • House Republicans introduced more than  55 anti-LGBTQI+ bills.

The report also lays out the major trends of Republicans’ anti-LGBTQI+ moves in the House, including:

  • Targeting transgender youth;
  • Restricting access to medically necessary care;
  • Encouraging discrimination against LGBTQI+ people;
  • Hijacking traditionally bipartisan bills to attack LGBTQI+ people; and,
  • Electing an anti-LGBTQI+ extremist as Speaker of the House.
