House LGBT Caucus Transgender Equality Task Force Denounces Implementation of Trans Military Ban
Washington D.C. – The LGBT Equality Caucus Transgender Equality Task Force released the following statement in response to the Department of Defense decision to implement the transgender military ban by April 12, 2019. On Tuesday, the Pentagon officially signed the policy banning transgender Americans from serving in the United States military, despite overwhelming opposition. The policy would not only prohibit transgender people from joining the military, but also prohibit any transgender person in the military from living consistent with their gender identity.
"Our nation's darkest days have always followed a government choice to abandon our founding principle that all Americans are created equal," said Transgender Equality Task Force Chair Rep. Joe Kennedy III (MA-04). "By choosing to implement a ban on transgender servicemembers, the Department of Defense has ignored science and expert opinion just to allow President Trump's bigotry to infiltrate our military. To every active duty transgender servicemember and every single transgender American who hopes to one day serve their country, this Task Force and our Congress sees you, hears you, and will never doubt your courage, your identity, or your commitment to this country."
