Equality Caucus Statement on Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s Decision to not Serve in Leadership in the 118th Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus celebrates the leadership and influence of Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD-05). Today, Majority Leader Hoyer announced his plans to not serve in leadership in the 118th Congress.
"Leader Hoyer has been a strong ally of the LGBTQ+ community and has consistently supported and helped bring to the floor legislation to better the lives of the LGBTQ+ community and the American people. During his tenure as Majority Leader, the House has considered a record number of pro-LGBTQ+ bills on the House floor," said Equality Caucus Chair David N. Cicilline (RI-01). "Leader Hoyer was especially instrumental in the repeal of the discriminatory ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy and has helped shepherd every major LGBTQ+ rights bill through the House over the past decade and a half, including the Equality Act. As Majority Leader, he has prioritized the equal treatment of all people and has responded to the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community with concrete actions. Our community owes a debt of gratitude to Leader Hoyer for his steadfast work in support of equality. I look forward to working with him in a new capacity next Congress, and I am honored to call him a colleague and friend."
