Equality Caucus Responds to Proposed Title IX Rule

June 23, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Biden Administration released proposed changes to Title IX regulations, which, among other provisions, make clear that Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics.

"The Biden Administration's move to make explicitly clear that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex characteristics is prohibited under Title IX will have a significant positive impact on the lives of LGBTQI+ students across the country," said Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01), Chair of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus. "As LGBTQI+ students face attacks from local legislatures, the Department of Education has an important role to play in protecting their rights – and this proposed rule is an important first step in that direction. This rule will help protect the rights of LGBTQI+ students and ensure they can learn in safe and supportive environments. While the Caucus is disappointed that this proposed rule does not address trans inclusion in sports, we look forward to working with the Department of Education to ensure that trans students have the same opportunities as any other students to play on sports teams, find community, and build values likes sportsmanship and teamwork."

Founded in 2008, the mission of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus is to promote equality for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The Caucus, which is led by the nine openly LGBTQ+ members of the House of Representatives, is strongly committed to achieving the full enjoyment of human rights for LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. and around the world.
