Equality Caucus Condemns Unjust Sentencing of American Brittney Griner

August 4, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus condemns the unjust sentencing of American citizen Brittney Griner, who has been wrongfully detained in Russia. The Equality Caucus previously endorsed H.Res. 1132, a resolution adopted by the House of Representatives calling for Griner's immediate release, and has continuously advocated for her release.

"Every day that Brittney Griner remains in detention in Russia is a reminder of Putin's contempt for human rights, human dignity, and the law. Griner is a proud member of the LGBTQI+ community and our community stands in solidarity with her," said Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01), Chair of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus. "The Biden Administration must continue working to bring Griner back home safely. She needs to be released immediately and her safety must remain a top priority."

Founded in 2008, the mission of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus is to promote equality for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The Caucus, which is led by the nine openly LGBTQ+ members of the House of Representatives, is strongly committed to achieving the full enjoyment of human rights for LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. and around the world.
