October 1, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus celebrates the beginning of LGBTQ+ History Month. This month, the Equality Caucus will be celebrating the many aspects of the LGBTQ+ community that make our history unique – including people, culture, places, and moments in history.

"LGBTQ+ History Month is a time to acknowledge what LGBTQ+ people have endured and celebrate all we have championed, trailblazed, and accomplished throughout history. LGBTQ+ History Month is a celebration of our community and a time to reflect on how far we have come, and how far we have to go." said Congressman David N. Cicilline (RI-01), Chair of the Equality Caucus. "Rights continue to be jeopardized for LGBTQ+ people. Anti-LGBTQ+ politicians, state legislatures, and governments around the world continue to treat LGBTQ+ people as second-class citizens and undeserving of basic human rights and decency. Let us use this month to educate ourselves on our history, the people that make up that history, and the lives impacted by this history — and to work to build a better future for all in our community."

"The Congress joins the American people in celebrating the history of our LGBTQ community, whose relentless activism and enduring solidarity have helped forge a more just nation," said Nancy Pelosi (CA-12), Speaker of the House. "From San Francisco's White Night riots to the victorious movement for marriage equality, LGBTQ Americans have answered oppression and hardship with extraordinary resilience and strength. Outraged by right-wing forces' continued attacks on LGBTQ Americans – and guided by the visionary leadership of the Equality Caucus – House Democrats will never relent in stamping out hate and defending the fundamental rights of every American."

"I'm proud to join with the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus in celebrating LGBTQ+ History Month. As we pay tribute to the courage and perseverance of those who worked to change attitudes and improve our laws, let us be inspired to continue making our country a place where all are equal and no one faces discrimination because of who they are or whom they love," said Steny Hoyer (MD-05), House Majority Leader. "I was honored to have played a central role in the repeal of ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell' in 2010, and I was proud to bring H.R. 5, the Equality Act, to the Floor both this Congress and last, in addition to the Respect for Marriage Act this summer. Together with my Democratic colleagues, I look forward to continuing to make LGBTQ+ history an integral part of our celebration of American history."

Founded in 2008, the mission of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus is to promote equality for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The Caucus, which is led by the nine openly LGBTQ+ members of the House of Representatives, is strongly committed to achieving the full enjoyment of human rights for LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. and around the world.
