Equality Caucus Celebrates Leadership of Co-Chair Sean Patrick Maloney

December 19, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the 117th Congress nears its end, the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus is celebrating the leadership of Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18). Rep. Maloney has served as Co-Chair of the Equality Caucus since 2013.

"Congressman Maloney made history when he was the first openly LGBTQ+ person to be elected to Congress from New York and again, two years ago, when he became the first LGBTQ+ person to Chair the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. He has been an exemplary advocate and representative for the LGBTQ+ community and his district," said Chair Cicilline. "During his time in Congress, he led many crucial efforts to advance LGBTQ+ equality, including efforts to address anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination and to improve the health and wellbeing of the LGBTQ+ community, such as with the introduction of the No Cost for Monkeypox Testing Act during the peak of the recent mpox outbreak. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him for the past decade and for all that he has done for the LGBTQ+ community. I am sure that he will continue to do great work in the future serving his community and this country."

Congressman Maloney was the first openly LGBTQ+ person to be elected to Congress from New York and the first LGBTQ+ person to Chair the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Congressman Maloney has been a leader in pushing legislation that would support the LGBTQ+ community. During his tenure in Congress, he led efforts to statutorily prohibit federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity and introduced various pro-LGBTQ+ bills, including the LGBTQ Essential Data Act, the Prohibition of Medicaid Funding for Conversion Therapy Act, and the No Cost for Monkeypox Testing Act, among other pro-LGBTQ+ efforts.

Founded in 2008, the mission of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus is to promote equality for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The Caucus, which is led by the nine openly LGBTQ+ members of the House of Representatives, is strongly committed to achieving the full enjoyment of human rights for LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. and around the world.
