Congressional Equality Caucus Announces Rep. Bonamici as LGBTQI+ Aging Issues Task Force Chair
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Congressional Equality Caucus announced Equality Caucus Vice Chair Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) as Chair of its LGBTQI+ Aging Issues Task Force for the 118th Congress. First established in the 114th Congress, the LGBTQI+ Aging Issues Task Force works to push for legislative and administrative action to protect the dignity and security of older LGBTQI+ people.
"I am honored to welcome Congresswoman Bonamici back as Chair of our LGBTQI+ Aging Issues Task Force. She has been a steadfast advocate for older LGBTQI+ Americans and a strong ally for the community at large," Equality Caucus Chair Mark Pocan (WI-02) said. "LGBTQI+ Americans face unique challenges as they get older, with their needs often unmet and resources often not equitably available to them. I look forward to working with Congresswoman Bonamici to ensure older LGBTQI+ Americans have the support and resources they need."
"I am grateful to be returning as Chair of the LGBTQI+ Aging Issues Task Force, and I thank the Equality Caucus for selecting me to serve in this leadership position," LGBTQI+ Aging Issues Task Force Chair Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) said. "LGBTQI+ seniors have higher rates of social isolation and poverty than their peers, and many feel pressure to hide who they are or who they love out of fear of discrimination. I have long worked to advance policies that help LGBTQI+ seniors age with dignity, and I will continue to work with my Equality Caucus colleagues to advocate for the priorities of older LGBTQI+ Americans."
